World Animal Day is an opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate and raise awareness for the tens of thousands of known threatened species around the world. When a species becomes endangered, it is a sign that the ecosystem is slowly falling apart. We wanted to engrain the same thoughts in the mind of our little Presidians as they participated and presented in role-playing in the guise of a Panda, a Tiger, and a Polar bear and shared species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation. They created awareness and celebrated with full zeal by dressing up as animals. They also showed through their actions that deforestation is one of the primary reasons species become endangered or extinct. Forests cover 31% of the Earth’s land and are home to much of the world’s biodiversity so they conveyed the message that it is essential that we understand the importance of endangered and threatened plant/animal species conservation and how as individuals we can make a difference.
